Devil and Donnie Most
Happy Days Are Here Again
While talking with Steve Schalchlin on my Tales of the Road Warriors podcast, he retold his taie of being on what was almost his deathbed, when in walked Anson Williams (Potsy from the TV show Happy Days and his visit gave Steve a new lease on life. This prompted my own memory involving a cast member from that same show which also helped change my life for the better. Enjoy.

You know we have something sort of in common with you I have a Happy Days kind of story that changed my life… And I've told it before
Steve Schalchlin 0:10
Oh, I wanna hear it
Hal In Philly 0:11
...about Donnie Most - Did I ever tell you the Devil and? - I call it "The Devil and Donny Most" So, I think I might just make it a separate, short episode.
Steve Schalchlin 0:23
Okay,
Hal InPhilly 0:25
I'll just tell you what happened when I first got to LA. I was living in Venice Beach you know, and every day I would see these people out there and it was like a carnival you know, the people that juggling chain saws and Henry Kari you know doing his Hendrix thing on roller skates and Oingo Boingo down, you know, there's just all these people busking and I'm like, you know I want to maybe it maybe I'll go out on the beach with my guitar and you know, put the... leave the case open, see if it's somebody throw a buck in... So I went down like way down with nobody was because I was kind of shy. I wanted to get my feet wet. I'm playing Friend of the Devil by the Grateful Dead.
Steve Schalchlin 1:11
Okay...yeah, that's a popular tune.
Hal InPhilly 1:12
Yeah, well I get to the I get every everybody knows it. I get to the part where, you know, say "said I runnin' but I'll take my time, a friend of the devil is a..." as soon as I out of the out of nowhere, this crazy lady comes running up to me and she spits right in my face and start screaming "YOUR THE DEVIL!!!!"
So I, I was afraid to play that song for a very long time. I just like, I don't know who I'm going to offend with that song.
So, must have been about five years later, you know, I was a singing waiter. And so about five years later I'm at Poppy's Star in Encino. And Danny Most comes in with his wife or girlfriend and another couple and I was their waiter and I said, "Is there anything you want to hear?" and he says, "Do you know any Grateful Dead?" (Laughter)
Steve Schalchlin 2:13
Oh, that's hysterica
Hal InPhilly 2:14
So, I said "I only know "Friend of the Devil" but I haven't played it in a very long time." He says, "Oh, I love that song. play that!"
Hal InPhilly 2:23
He broke the curse. He tipped me 10 bucks. And after that I was able to play it again.
Unknown Speaker 2:31
That is so funny. And ten bucks? That's nice.
Hal InPhilly 2:35
Yeah. So yeah, so I call it the Devil and Donnie Most
